The maker's mark is struck three times being recorded by Timothy Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and Their Marks, 1550-1750 1992, p.81 as that of Thomas Cory of Warminster. Cory served his apprenticeship in London to Edward Wade for 9 years. He was admitted to the Goldsmiths' Company in 1655 and it was some time after, probably around 1660 that he moved to Wiltshire. We know his son, Humphrey, was baptised in Warminster in 1662 suggesting that Thomas was already established in that town. Very few pieces ever come on to the market from Warminster and this is a good tumbler with excellent colour and patination.
