Of traditional form, one end with a shorter but wider scoop engraved on the back with a crest of 5 plumes, the other end with longer and narrower scoop and fitted in an old but not contemporary case-perhaps late 19th century.
The crest is probably that of Dutton of Sherborne. Ralph Dutton left his estates to his nephew James Naper of Loughcrew, county Meath, Eldest son of James Naper by Anne Dutton, Daughter of Sir Ralph Dutton, 1st Baronet. James Naper assumed the name of Dutton by royal licence in accordance with his uncle's will. His eldest son, James Dutton, became 1st Baron Sherborne in 1784. The father, James, was born in 1712 and died 6th September, 1776

Marrow scoops have always been popular amongst collectors, partly because the general price range is usually under a thousand pounds and also there is a reasonable supply. However, once the standard examples have been acquired the appetite grows for the rarer pieces. Lamerie made very few scoops and such an example as this might be the ultimate in any collection. As usual for this great maker the weight is just that little more than most others of this period, the marks are excellent and there is the added bonus of a case.
